Introduction to the Letter to the Ephesians

History and Background of the Assemblies of Ephesus and Paul’s Involvement
  • Paul’s first encounter with Ephesus was at the end of his missionary journey. (MULTILINE NOTE BIG)
  • Ephesus
    • of Asia
    • Important city
    • Population of 200,000 to 250,000
    • Considered a “ city” in modern terms
    • of Artemis worship

  • Paul most likely did not the first assembly in Ephesus.

  • Paul’s had a great impact on the development and growth of the Ekklasia in Ephesus.

  • The growth of the Ekklasia was so great it the worship of Artemis.

  • Before being imprisoned, Paul warned the elders that would become a threat.

  • After release, Paul went back and discovered false teachers had .

  • Paul left to combat the false teaching.

  • In Revelation Jesus commends the Ephesians for being vigilant about rejecting false teaching but them for having “forsaken the love [they] had at first.”

  • Tradition says the Apostle settled in Ephesus with Jesus’ mother Mary.

Argument against claims that Paul did not write.
  • The letter is more impersonal because it was probably written to a audience than other letters.

  • However, it is written with the that the readers are familiar with the author.

What to expect from Ephesians
  • The letter is broken into two sections.
    • Chapters 1-3 are an explanation of the .
    • Chapters 4-6 are an explanation of what it looks like to to the Gospel (Gospel living).

  • This letter ought to our understanding of the Gospel and its power to transform.

  • It should also a greater response to God’s love.

  6. What is one way you can respond to what God is saying to you in this letter?
